Syria, a war-torn country that has not played a home-game at home for several years now, has managed to score two goals against Team Melli in Iran.

With an early goal from Tamer Haj Mohamad (13′), Syria took the lead in Azadi Stadium, but just before the half-time whistle, Sardar Azmoun evened things up by directing a deflection in the visitors’ net.

In the 64th minute of action, Azmoun scored another goal to give Iran the lead.

But the valiant Syrians did not quit, and pushed until Omar Al Somah scored the equalizer in the 90+3 minute.

Therefore, Iran has finished its World Cup qualifying campaign with 22 points, topping Group A.

South Korea managed to directly qualify after drawing Uzbekistan in Tashkent, and finishing second in the group, with 15 points.

Syria has finished third in the group (13 points), finishing ahead of Uzbekistan by only goal-difference. In the play-offs, the Arab nation will face the third place team of Group B, which will either be Saudi Arabia or Australia. Then the winner of this play-off round will face the fourth place CONCACAF (North America) team in the final round of qualifications: intercontinental play-offs.
