Iran’s two Esteghlals through to knock-out stage of Champions League

105 Views Esteghlal Tehran and Esteghlal Khuzestan have made it through to the Round of 16 of the 2017 AFC Champions League.

Esteghlal Tehran defeated Al Taawoun (Saudi) 2-1 in Doha, and has therefore finished second in Group A, with 11 points. Jaber Ansari (19′) and Kaveh Rezaei (76′) were the goalscorers for the Iranian club. The Blues will face Al Ain (UAE) in the Round of 16 of this tournament, on May 22nd in Tehran, and May 29th in Al Ain.

Esteghlal Khuzestan gained one point from Al Jazira in Ahvaz, as this match ended 1-1. Mehdi Zobeydi (86′) scored the goal that tied the match for the home-team. The Khuzestani Blues have finished second in Group B, with 9 points; they will face Al Hilal (Saudi) on May 23rd and May 30th, on a home-and-away format that will be played on neutral ground (to be decided).

Three out of four Iranian clubs (Persepolis, Esteghlal Tehran, Esteghlal Khuzestan)  have made it to the knock-out stage of this edition of the AFC Champions League. with Zob Ahan being the lone club that failed to make it out of the group stage.
